As the light returns and the world begins to awaken from winter's slumber, many of us feel those familiar spring-like urges to step outside and embrace life's vibrancy.
This month our yoga practice is focusing on the water element and exploring how we can flow with the currents of life, embracing our destined paths instead of resisting what is meant to be.
The beauty of life lies in our ability to choose how we respond to its challenges. While it’s easy to push back against obstacles, we can shift our perspective to see them as opportunities for growth. This shift isn’t always easy but practicing mindfulness on the mat can help us cultivate awareness in the present moment.
Being truly present allows us to recognize the blessings already within our lives. It’s important to acknowledge that nothing remains static; each moment is an opportunity to appreciate the here and now.
Philosophically, we are reminded that our souls have chosen a path before entering this earthly experience, suggesting that our journeys are, in many ways, pre-determined. This helps us to move into that state of flow and allow our life path to unfold without trying to control every element.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on the qualities of water:
Water cleanses: It flushes out the old and makes space for the new.
Water reflects: In stillness, we can see our true selves.
Water is dynamic and flowing: To avoid stagnation, we must learn to move through life gracefully. Water nourishes and lubricates: Essential for our physical and emotional well-being.
Water unifies: There is immense power in collaboration.
Water finds new pathways: Even when faced with obstacles, it adapts and flows onward.
Our bodies are composed of approximately 70% water, which plays a crucial role in nourishing, dissolving, and transporting nutrients to our cells while flushing out waste. This fluid essence protects our body's pathways—whether through the brain, joints, or other organs—reminding us that flow is our natural state.
Embracing the flow in our lives is a skill we can develop through regular yoga practice.
Life can sometimes feel tumultuous, akin to being caught in a riptide, pulling us in every direction. On calmer days, we may find ourselves floating effortlessly along.
The key is to remain present and compassionate with ourselves, regardless of the circumstances.
In our pursuit of aspirations, it’s common to push, strive, and control outcomes. While this can be exhilarating and energizing, it’s essential to check in with ourselves.
If the effort feels exhausting or joyless, it may be time to pivot and rediscover what brings us happiness.
Sometimes, instead of rowing against the current, we need to relax and allow ourselves to be carried along. When the water element feels imbalanced in our lives, we may notice a decline in creativity, emotional turbulence, or an unhealthy reliance on substances. To recalibrate, consider taking time to swim, float in a warm bath, or sit near a body of water. Listening to its flow can soothe and restore balance.
Alternatively, rolling out your yoga mat and moving in a way that feels good can also rekindle that connection to the water element. As we navigate the currents of life, let’s remember to embrace the fluidity and grace that water embodies, allowing it to guide us toward joy and fulfilment.
